Learning About Fresh Food
Sonora Elementary School is excited to announce the return of its Open Air Farmers Market for the 2025–26 school year!
This year’s market featured:
- Josh from Tyson Hill Farm in Waterford, bringing a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce.
- Mountain Microgreens, sharing nutrient-rich greens and the benefits of growing and eating them.
- Blue Bell Bees, giving students a chance to learn about honeybees, pollination, and taste the sweetness of local honey.
- The students learned about H20 and Blue Zones Project provided free water bottles for all participating students.
Students had the opportunity to learn firsthand what it takes to grow the food we eat and will get to “shop” for their own fresh fruits, vegetables, and other local products.
Thanks to full funding by the Sonora Elementary Cafeteria, there is no cost for students to participate.
This event builds on last year’s success, when all students experienced the first farmers market at SES. Organized by Food Service Manager Shanan Gonzales, the event was designed to give students a real taste of shopping at a farmer’s market while connecting them with local agriculture.
“I wanted to be able to offer the kids a look at what it’s like to shop at a farmers market and see where their fresh fruits and vegetables come from,” said Gonzales. “This gives them the opportunity to select their own varieties of fruits and vegetables directly from a farmer.”
Sonora Elementary is proud to continue this fun and educational tradition that supports healthy choices, community connections, and lifelong learning.
