Boys Basketball Begins…
The J.A.K. Tournament at Sonora Elementary School is an annual preseason boys’ basketball event for local 7th and 8th grade teams. “J.A.K.” represents the surnames of influential Sonora educators and coaches—Mr. Juhl, Mr. Aitken, and Mr. Kearney—whose lasting contributions to youth athletics and the local basketball community continue to inspire generations of players. Established in 1976, this year marked the 49th Annual J.A.K. Tournament.
Traditionally held each January, the tournament spans at least a week and features multiple teams competing in a structured, bracket-style format. This year we had 11 teams in 8th Grade, and 9 teams in 7th. It serves as a community kickoff to the basketball season, giving local youth teams the opportunity for competitive play before regular league games begin.
This event is always a highlight as we welcome visiting schools along with their families and fans. This year was especially meaningful as we celebrated our brand-new gym—complete with expanded seating, a concession booth, and state-of-the-art scoreboards. Our original gym was also buzzing with action as it hosted the 7th grade games, allowing excitement to fill the entire campus.
Thank you to all the teams and coaches who brought their best and helped raise the level of play. A special thank-you to our Athletic Director, Ms. Alomia, and to the many volunteers who made this massive event possible through their work with concessions, scorekeeping, setup, and cleanup. The J.A.K. Tournament continues to be a true celebration of community, sportsmanship, and tradition.
